🛑 Inappropriate Internet Searches Made by Students

In August, the Board approved and directed the implementation of our Three Strike Procedures.  This memo serves as a reminder of those procedures.  As a reminder, Canyons School District uses ContentKeeper, a web and content filtering system, to ensure safe and appropriate internet use by students. ContentKeeper filters all activity on district-managed Chromebooks, both on and off the district network,  and provides automated reports when potentially inappropriate or blocked search terms are used.

Each night, searches are filtered, including those related to games, proxies, VPNs, and inappropriate content. The following outlines the monitoring, alert, and disciplinary process followed when student search activity triggers ContentKeeper alerts.

  1. Automated Alerts to Parents and Students
  2. Each night, ContentKeeper automatically logs flagged searches and sends an alert email to parents (any student) and the student (secondary students only).

·    This notification is informational only and not considered a disciplinary action (“not a strike”).

·    The email advises families that an automated system has detected a search term that may be inappropriate, but context has not yet been reviewed.

·    IT staff and administrators later review the flagged activity to determine if further action is needed.

3.          Review of Logged Searches

a.          District IT staff review all blocked searches daily.

·    If a student’s search activity appears persistent or of a sexual/inappropriate nature, the team conducts a detailed 14-day search history review.

·    When searches are verified to be inappropriate, a “Strike” event is recorded, and communications are sent as outlined below.

3. Strike Process:

-First Strike

· Triggered when searches are confirmed as inappropriate after review.

· An email is sent to the student (secondary only), parent/guardian, school administration, and School Performance.

· The message outlines the inappropriate searches and reminds families of the district’s responsible-use policy.

· Purpose of email and conversation with student: To notify and warn the student and parent that the account has been reviewed and found to contain inappropriate activity.

-Second Strike

·   Triggered when a student continues inappropriate searches after receiving a first strike.

· The student’s account is placed in the “Highly Restricted” Internet-filtering group, which limits access to approved educational resources (e.g., Google Drive, Docs, Meet, Canvas).

· A second-strike email is sent to all stakeholders, outlining the increased restriction and the process for reinstating regular access.

o   Meet with the student

-Third Strike

· If a student continues to engage in inappropriate searches after being placed in the Highly Restricted group, the account will be locked after school hours.

· A third communication will be sent to all relevant parties outlining the additional restrictions.

The goal of this process is to promote digital citizenship and ensure safe online environments for all students. Automated alerts, review procedures, and tiered interventions allow the district to balance transparency with accountability while supporting appropriate student technology use.

A Message of Gratitude from the Altara PTA

As we enter this season of thanks, the Altara PTA would like to express our sincere appreciation for our wonderful school community. Each of you plays a meaningful role in making Altara a place where students feel supported, teachers feel valued, and families feel connected. From classroom donations and event participation to simply showing up with positivity and kindness, your efforts truly make a difference.

We are especially grateful for the generosity you’ve shown throughout the school year so far. Whether you contributed to a Spirit Night, volunteered at an activity, or offered help behind the scenes, please know that your support is noticed and appreciated. Our programs and events thrive because of parents and families like you.

As Thanksgiving approaches, we want to wish you and your loved ones a holiday filled with warmth, rest, and connection. Thank you for being the heart of Altara Elementary. We are proud to be part of such a caring, dedicated community, and we look forward to all the good we’ll continue to do—together.

♥️ Choose Kindness

We have the KINDEST students!

We are on the lookout for any acts of kindness at Altara.  We are honored and grateful for the students at our school!  Here are some examples of kindness happening at our school these past few weeks:

Alice Wall (kindergarten) Alice shows kindness to many friends but especially to Sophie in helping her understand what to do and say in classroom discussions. She always tells me what a good job Sophie is doing.

Zach Sorenson (2nd grade) Zach is kind to others. He makes sure everyone is included in a project. Thanks for being kind and helping others.

Kaythan Bustillos (2nd grade) Kaythan is always ready to listen and helps others when they are struggling. Thanks for being a great helper.

Kaitlyn Vogeler (1st grade) Kaitlyn was kind by showing some students what activity to do when they came back to class from being in another group.

Jacob Dennison (4th grade) Jake helped another student with long division with a very positive and kind attitude.

Remie Carothers (2nd grade) Remie always cleans up her area and goes above and beyond helping others clean up as well.
