MONDAY MINUTE FOR THE WEEK OF 12.15.25
Technology Violation Policy
In August, the Board approved and directed the implementation of our Three Strike Procedures. This memo serves as a reminder of those procedures. As a reminder, Canyons School District uses ContentKeeper, a web and content filtering system, to ensure safe and appropriate internet use by students. ContentKeeper filters all activity on district-managed Chromebooks, both on and off the district network, and provides automated reports when potentially inappropriate or blocked search terms are used.
Each night, searches are filtered, including those related to games, proxies, VPNs, and inappropriate content. The following outlines the monitoring, alert, and disciplinary process followed when student search activity triggers ContentKeeper alerts.
- Automated Alerts to Parents and Students
- Each night, ContentKeeper automatically logs flagged searches and sends an alert email to parents (any student) and the student (secondary students only).
- This notification is informational only and not considered a disciplinary action (“not a strike”).
- The email advises families that an automated system has detected a search term that may be inappropriate, but context has not yet been reviewed.
- IT staff and administrators later review the flagged activity to determine if further action is needed.
- Review of Logged Searches
- District IT staff review all blocked searches daily.
- If a student’s search activity appears persistent or of a sexual/inappropriate nature, the team conducts a detailed 14-day search history review.
- When searches are verified to be inappropriate, a “Strike” event is recorded, and communications are sent as outlined below.
- Strike Process
First Strike
- Triggered when searches are confirmed as inappropriate after review.
- An email is sent to the student (secondary only), parent/guardian, school administration, and School Performance.
- The message outlines the inappropriate searches and reminds families of the district’s responsible-use policy.
- Purpose of email and conversation with student: To notify and warn the student and parent that the account has been reviewed and found to contain inappropriate activity.
- Log in Dashboard
Second Strike
- Triggered when a student continues inappropriate searches after receiving a first strike.
- The student’s account is placed in the “Highly Restricted” Internet-filtering group, which limits access to approved educational resources (e.g., Google Drive, Docs, Meet, Canvas).
- A second strike email is sent to all stakeholders, outlining the increased restriction and the process for reinstating regular access.
- Meet with the student and log in Dashboard
Third Strike
- If a student continues to engage in inappropriate searches after being placed in the Highly Restricted group, the account will be locked after school hours.
- A third communication will be sent to all relevant parties outlining the additional restrictions.
- Meet with the student and log in Dashboard
- Administrator Access to ContentKeeper Reports
- Administrators can view ContentKeeper data through the District Dashboard:
- Select “ContentKeeper Reports” under Dashboard Modules.
- Choose “ContentKeeper Keyword Log.”
- Select the desired date range (defaults to the previous day).
- Reports include two sections:
- Flagged Search Log: Lists each flagged search term, student information, and links to view the full history.
- Student Summary: Provides total flagged searches, strike counts, and overall office referral totals.
- On an individual student’s page, administrators can:
- View search history under the “ContentKeeper” tab.
- Check for strikes or filtering changes.
- Review all flagged terms and monitoring notes.
The goal of this process is to promote digital citizenship and ensure safe online environments for all students. Automated alerts, review procedures, and tiered interventions allow the district to balance transparency with accountability while supporting appropriate student technology use.
If you have any questions about this process please feel free to contact a principal, Julie Fielding or assistant principal, Sara Caldwell.
♥️ Choose Kindness ♥️
We have the KINDEST students!
We are on the lookout for extraordinary acts of kindness at Altara. Here are some examples of kindness happening at our school these past few weeks:
Logan Parker (2nd grade) Logan is always willing to help his partner and table mates with math problems.
Ivy Anderson (kindergarten) Ivy shows kindness in so many ways. She is always kind to her friends and helps others clean up during centers. Way to go, Ivy!
Maverick Hill (2nd grade) Maverick includes everyone and is kind to others.
Hudson Swingley (Veazie) Hudson helped another student pick up their supplies after they spilled their tote.
Aitana Guzman Torresi (kindergarten) Aitana shows kindness by waiting patiently for help – even when it is hard and frustrating!
Cannon Taylor (kindergarten) Cannon loves to draw fun pictures and share them with friends.
Library Book Policy
Thank you for your continued support of our school library. We wanted to share a brief update about a new library policy designed to help schools manage the high number of lost books and unpaid fines.
From now on, students with late, lost, or unpaid fines for library books will not be able to check out additional books until the missing items are returned or replaced, or the fines have been paid. This step will help ensure books are available for all students and that our collection of books in the school library is maintained. We appreciate your understanding and help with this new policy.
Makerspaces
STEAM “Makerspaces” is an ongoing FREE after school activity that takes place on select Fridays from 1:30 to 3:00 pm in the ART ROOM.
On December 19th, there are 10 spots for a Special Project. You will get to make and take home a Control Panel that can send & receive morse code. There will also be 10 spots for the regular Makerspaces stations with various STEAM activities to choose from.
Please check back soon for dates in January and February!
We will also have a couple more special projects like an Animation Spinner and a Claw Machine.
I look forward to seeing your students at Makerspaces! Please sign up using the link below.
Thanks, Ms. Kelsey
