Monday Minute – September 9. 2024

Dear Parents,

Each month we practice one of our emergency drills so that we are ready to act in an emergency.   This week on Friday we will be practicing our Lockdown drill.  I announce over the intercom that we are doing a practice lockdown and teachers shut their classroom doors (which are always locked), block the window with black paper, and gather students in a corner of the room and quietly wait.  The custodian and I walk the halls to check that doors are locked, windows are covered, and classes are quiet.  It takes about two minutes and the drill is over.   The words I use with the students is we practice a lockdown if there is a problem inside our building that we need everyone to be in their classrooms, and we practice it just like we practice a fire drill.  Next month we’ll practice our drill for problems that occur outside our building, and we need to stay inside our classrooms because of something happening outside, such as a gas spill or police presence.

Conference Sign up

Parent Teacher conferences are at the end of the month on Sept. 23rd and 25th.   Please sign up for a time that works for your schedule.  Directions on how to sign up were sent through Parent Square.  Don’t forget to visit the Book Fair in the gym while you’re here!

Choose Kindness

We are on the lookout for any acts of kindness at Altara.  Here are some examples of kindness happening at our school these past couple of weeks.  We have the best students!

Grant Keys (kindergarten) Grant has been an outstanding friend by helping others, being kind, and sharing.  He makes safe choices on the playground and in the classroom!  Go Grant!!

June Spurling (kindergarten) June has shown kindness every day!  I have seen her play nicely on the playground and go out of her way to include others.  June is the perfect example of a kind friend!

Ruby Nelson (kindergarten) Ruby is kind to the people at her table.  She shares her supplies and helps clean up.

Maggie Courtney (kindergarten) Maggie was kind and helped a friend who was sad.  She played with her and held her hand in line.

Emily Ashing (1st grade) Emily was showing and reminding students what the rules and procedures are in the classroom.

Nora Miller (1st grade) Nora was helping others put away books to keep our classroom clean!

Declan Hunter (1st grade) Declan helps others find the correct pages in our math/Wonders/95% books!

Junie Barney (2nd grade) Junie always has a smile for everyone and is a constant support to students at her table.

Jade Baldwin (2nd grade) Jade is nice to others and participates in class.  She always tries her best.  Way to go, Jade!
