Dear Families,
Let it snow! As winter weather rolls into the Salt Lake Valley, here’s a brief description of Canyons District’s extreme weather guidelines. Keep in mind that while snowstorms can wreak havoc with morning commutes, weather-related school closures and delays are rare. In the event, however, the weather is so extreme that road conditions become unsafe, the District will either implement a late start, giving snow plows time to clear the roads, or close schools and pivot to a remote-learning day. In either case, we’ll notify families and employees early in the morning through our ParentSquare alert system. We also will employ our websites and social media accounts. Please note that closures are for one day only. No announcement means schools will be open and operating as usual.
Resource Closet
You might not know this, but we have a Resource Closet here at Altara! It is stocked with shelf-stable food, toiletries (toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and feminine hygiene supplies), and some basic clothing items (shirts, pants, underwear, socks). If any of these would be helpful to your family, please reach out to our social worker at bethany.foster@canyonsdistrict.org. We have plenty to go around!
Technology Tip
Did you know? A whopping 59% of preteens and teens surveyed by Common Sense reported using their phones between midnight and 5 a.m. on school nights. Common Sense Media has practical tips to help kids establish a healthy balance between phones and sleep. https://cnyns.org/48k6C2P
STEAM Squad
Altara’s STEAM Squad is starting up again! This semester, it will be open to Kinder-2nd grade students. Student flyers will be sent home in students’ backpacks with information on when sessions will be held, and expectations for those wishing to attend. If you would like to sign your child up, please follow the link below. There are only 25 spots available. Mrs. Weber will send out an acceptance letter by February 2nd. If you do not receive one, your child will be placed on the waiting list. Contact Mrs. Weber at Kathryn.weber@canyonsdistrict.org for any questions you may have. Thank you!
